Hibiscus tea has a tart, distinctive, berry-like flavor and a natural, bright red color. To balance the tartness, sugar or other sweeteners are added to the beverage. Hibiscus is completely free of caffeine.
Numerous scientific studies confirm the antioxidant effects of hibiscus. The calyx is rich in polyphenols and anthocyanin pigments, which are largely responsible for antioxidant effects. Many of the studies can be used to help support health benefit claims for aqueous hibiscus extracts.
